Description
Island of Light: A 1954 Summer Camp Story is a heartwarming tale of four young campers spending a week at Word of Life Island on Schroon Lake, NY. Each comes from a different background and brings a unique personality—from a shy, hardworking farm girl to a determined preteen boy eager to prove he’s just as capable as the older campers.
Set during the camp’s early years in the summer of 1954, this nostalgic coming-of-age story offers more than just timeless friendships and faith-filled moments. Readers are invited into a lively week filled with numerous tournaments—basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, and more—as well as horseback riding, swimming, gospel services, mischievous pranks, and the occasional conflict that helps each camper grow.
Based on the real-life Word of Life Island, founded in 1947, Island of Light takes readers back in time to mid-century America and offers a heartfelt tribute to the formative power of Christian camp life. The book also features dozens of authentic photographs from the era, bringing the camp’s rich history to life.

This book kept my attention, and I really enjoyed all the pictures that were included! It was very easy to read, and a lot of details were put into the book, making it easy to picture the scenes. The mystery added to the enjoyment of the story. Also, I really liked how the epilogue was written.
